The Status Quo

(Source)
I just read of a fellow blogger in North Carolina that is being harassed by the NC Board of Dietetics / Nutrition because he writes about how he used the Paleo diet to cure his diabetes and he is not licensed by the state.

In what distorted world do we live in that bureaucrats would throw a blogger in jail for writing about how he changed the way he eats to cure himself of disease?

I got ahold of their email address ~ info@ncbdn.organd sent them a quick note.

To whom it may concern,
I am appalled to hear that a fellow blogger is being forced into silence for writing about how he cured himself of diabetes. If the NC medical board is so ignorant and self righteous to criminalize someone for writing about his experiences using food to heal himself, then the United States is in a sorry state. Keep your grubby bureaucratic hands out of free speech and let those of us who want to trade information on health and food trade freely. The information that you preach is outdated and down right wrong and makes thousands upon thousands of people sick and prevents them from healing themselves.
I hope Steve Cooksey fights for his right to free speech and continues to help people heal themselves. Maybe those of you at the NC medical board should start reading up on what really heals people and prevents disease- or are your heads so far up big pharma's ass that you can't tell the difference between right and wrong?
Thank you,

I encourage any of you who feel strongly about being able to share information on the internet to write the the North Carolina Board of Dietetics / Nutrition and tell them that it is NOT okay to criminalize this man. This could very well trickle down the line and effect me one day, which is why I wrote to them. I know my one email probably won't make a difference, but if each of you who reads this writes just one sentence to them and floods their inbox maybe a difference will be made.

Feel free to copy what I wrote.

Thank you in advance to anyone who takes the 2 minutes to help this guy out!

The State of Cancer Research Today

I have thought for a while now that something must be wrong with the underlying research that leads everyone involved in the world of cancer in America to believe that the standard treatment protocol should be chemo, radiation, or surgery. When cancer is ultimately caused by a deficient immune system over a period of time, how then can a treatment that breaks your immune system down even more be a cure?

It's not for a lot of people.

Cancer industry total fraud exposed: Nearly all 'scientific' studies fail to be replicated
Thursday, April 19, 2012 by: Jonathan Benson, staff writer for Natural News (Original Source)
The vast majority of so-called scientific studies focused on cancer research are inaccurate and potentially fraudulent, suggests a new review published in the journal Nature. A shocking 88 percent of 53 "landmark" studies on cancer that have been published in reputable journals over the years cannot be reproduced, according to the review, which means that their conclusions are patently false.
C. Glenn Begley, a former head of global cancer research at drug giant Amgen and author of the review, was unable to replicate the findings of 47 of the 53 studies he examined. It appears as though researchers are simply fabricating findings that will garner attention and headlines rather than publishing what they actually discover, which helps them to maintain a steady stream of grant funding but deceives the public.
"These are the studies the pharmaceutical industry relies on to identify new targets for drug development," said Begley about the false studies. "But if you're going to place a $1 million or $2 million or $5 million bet on an observation, you need to be sure it's true. As we tried to reproduce these papers we became convinced you can't take anything at face value."
Begley says he cannot publish the names of the studies whose findings are false. But since it is now apparent that the vast majority of them are invalid, it only follows that the vast majority of modern approaches to cancer treatment are also invalid.
Back in 2009, researchers from the University of Michigan's Comprehensive Cancer Center also published an analysis that revealed many popular cancer studies to be false. As can be expected, one of the primary causes of false results was determined to be conflicts of interest that tended to favor "findings" that worked out best for drug companies rather than for the people (http://www.naturalnews.com/026314_cancer_research_studies.html).
Published research for other conditions also found to be invalid.
The Nature study also confirms what was previously uncovered by Dr. George Robertson from Dalhousie University, who found the same inconsistencies in published research studies on Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. Just like with cancer, it appears that the foundation upon which drugs for these conditions have been developed is fallacious as a result of phony research.
And scientists working for drug giant Bayer have run into similar problems in other areas as well, which they outlined in a 2011 paper entitled Believe it or not. According to their findings, much of the published data with which they were expected to develop new drugs could not be reproduced, either.
"The scientific community assumes that the claims in a preclinical study can be taken at face value," add Begley and his colleague Dr. Lee Ellis in their review. This published research also assumes that "the main message of [papers] can be relied on [...] Unfortunately, this is not always the case."
Ironically, the only thing all these scientists have been able to successfully reproduce over the years is research showing that much of modern science is unsound. Whether it is funded by drug companies or by agenda-driven federal grants, the so-called "gold standard" of science has been debunked as a greed-driven myth.

I am sure there are many many cases of people who went through the standard course of treatment and came out on the other end cancer-free, but how many of those never had cancer return? I would bet money that it was a small percent of those cancer survivors.

If you look at the statistics of survival (depending on which cancer you are looking at) when using the standard treatment of chemo, radiation, and/or surgery, most often they are not good. Three to six months to 5 years. That's not survival to me. Survival means cancer never comes back and I die at the ripe old age of 97.

What we have here in America is a huge group of people relying on scientifically bogus findings to push the drugs that make pharmaceuticals more money than you and I could fathom each year, while patients are poisoned. It's disgusting really.

So what's the solution? Well, in my humble opinion, prevention, and if I am unfortunate enough to develop cancer, then I would be on the first plane down to the Gerson Institute in Mexico. You may think that 13 fresh pressed juices and coffee enemas every day are extreme. I think sitting in a chair in an Oncologist's office getting pumped with poison and being sent home with no instructions on how I can change my lifestyle to help my situation is extreme.

What do you think?

CONTEST: Name that juice

So, May 1st is right around the corner. That was the self-imposed launch date for Raw Generation. Ahh how time flies and the to-do list never gets any shorter. Well, here's an update...
  • The website is pretty solid with a few minor details that I need to work out.
  • Our 1st recipe is (do I dare say it?) soooo close to being finalized
  • We still don't have our packaging/bottles figured out yet
  • Because we don't have our packaging figured out yet, we don't have our shipping materials figured out yet.
This brings me to tonight's topic. WE NEED A NAME FOR OUR SIGNATURE JUICE!

The base of each of our signature juices is going to be dark green leafy vegetables: kale, collards, spinach, Swiss chard, & wheat grass. We are going to sell the stuff straight up 100% concentrated, 75% green w/ fruit juice mix, and 50% green with fruit juice mix.

We are looking for the "Coco Puffs" of fresh pressed juice. This means we need a name that will become our signature juice brand and convey that it's green, healthy, vitamin packed, fresh, raw. It can be as creative as you are and artwork is welcome, although not necessary. Also, it should be flexible as we plan on growing the line of juices with different flavor combinations.

$100 TO THE WINNER

We will send you a check if we use your idea, and if there are two that we combine, both people will split the $100.

Please leave a comment below, or email me at jessicageier@gmail.com with any ideas you have. Also, we are asking everyone to like our Facebook page here and/or follow us on Twitter @RawGeneration here for information on raw foods, healthy lifestyles, and updates on Raw Generation.

THANK YOU!

MINT: The finale

MINT BURGERS!!! I forget who told me about this recently, but it stuck with me. I had some ground beef from the farm, I was craving meat, and voila!

All you do is mix an egg with the ground beef, sprinkle a little salt and pepper, chop some Vidalia onions and mint and form into patties.

So fresh!!!! And you really taste the mint. It's a nice cooling compliment to the beef. I served it with avocado and black beans. I feel like when you eat burgers with buns it's too much. First the bread is usually garbage- read the label next time. High fructose corn syrup, white flour, and hydrogenated oils are common. This is a nice healthy option.

This is the last mint recipe for the foreseeable future. I think :)

MINT: Part 3

Are you sick of mint yet? I'm sure as hell not :)

I tried mint in my salad, and salad dressing. So good! I just chopped it up and mixed it in with the salad, and then chopped some more up and used my magic bullet to blend it all together.

  • lettuce: bibb, red leafy, green leafy, spinach, & escarole
  • red onion
  • gala apple
  • cucumber
  • mint
  • olive oil
  • apple cider vinegar (just a little bit)
  • honey
  • salt & pepper
  • thyme
  • mint
Don't you wish I made all of your salads? Haha, this was really light and refreshing. A perfect summer salad. And you know how when you are out to dinner or out on a date and you don't want to order a salad because they are so awkward to eat. Like you have a giant leaf in your tooth, or you slurp salad dressing all over the place. Well, if you chop the lettuce up really small it's so much easier to get in your mouth!

Aren't you jealous of the photo shoot I had with lettuce?

MINT: Part Deux

(Source)

Let's talk about drinks. I know you are thinking mojitos, which I love if made on the not-so-sweet side. But I'm going to talk about drinks that you can drink all day every day with mint. If I drank mojitos all day everyday I wouldn't have much in the way of cancer prevention to write about now would I?

First, a client of mine asked me the other day 'is there anything other than water that I can drink?' I said, 'well, tea or organic soda which is still sugary but at least it's not high fructose corn syrup.' But I completely forgot about iced tea! Like the kind you make from real tea bags, not the powdered S-H-I-T you buy in a can. (I could drink that sugar water all day everyday, but then I'd have nothing to write about and I'd be 400 lbs.)

Iced Tea = a pitcher w/ a few teabags, boiling water, and MINT!

It's that simple. Just stick it in the refrigerator and drink when cool, or you can pour it into a large cup with ice and it's instant. So refreshing!

(Source)
Another thing you can do is juice mint! Here is my #1 refreshing juice that still has the dark greens in it so you are getting a ton of vitamins and minerals.

  • 2 apples
  • 3 mint sprigs
  • 3 handfuls spinach
  • 1 head kale
  • 1/2 cucumber
AMAZEBALLS! If you have a juicer I highly recommend you try this recipe. The apple, cucumber, and mint will cover up the bitter taste of the kale.

Enjoy!

5 Weeks til Memorial Day Weekend!

So I just realized it's 5 weeks until Memorial Day weekend!!!! This is by far my favorite weekend of the year because it's the start of the summer and you have months of warm weather ahead of you. I wanted to make a point of sharing one of my long-term goals with all of you because I think it's an important one that everyone can relate to.

Being comfortable in your own skin.

This has been an ongoing struggle for me for years. Growing up I would always compare myself to others and wishing I had what they did. I'm talking specifically about being thin, which looking back I was, but in my mind I was bigger than my friends. This is actually ridiculous because looking at pictures of myself, I was a toothpick.

In high school I ran track and life guarded. I was still a toothpick, and still thought I needed to be thinner, although I do remember at certain points feeling really good about myself and knowing that I was thin. There were always things to improve though. Looking back at pictures, I was COMPLETELY ridiculous feeling this way about myself. I was in the best shape of my life!!!

Enter college, learning to cook, drinking a lot, and becoming "comfortable" in a long term relationship. Looking back I can't believe I let myself go like that. I mean I didn't gain 100 lbs or anything, but I was dealing with some serious chub- for the first time in my life.

I didn't really start to lose it until about 2 years ago when I started changing my diet and working out consistently. Before I would binge workout, lose a few lbs, and then go right back to what had made me gain weight in the first place. It's a vicious cycle. But really I think the working out had much less to do with it  than the food did mainly because the weeks I had great results were the ones that I drastically changed what I ate while keeping my workouts the same.

I feel better about myself than I have in a long time, however those feelings of being uncomfortable still creep in. I still have "problem" areas that just aren't going away fast enough (haha nothing ever happens fast enough for me). But what is different now is I know how ridiculous I was, I know that I have a lot of things going for me, and I know that I am on the right path to making sure my body is healthy and my mind is happy. I want to be comfortable in my own skin.

So why does Memorial Day have to do with any of this?

Because summer is the time to wear little dresses and bathing suits. It's when I've tended to feel down on myself more because I haven't been comfortable in my body and I couldn't cover up in a sweater and jeans. I always felt like I was stuck with the weight and didn't know why it wasn't coming off.

I'm glad to say I don't feel like that anymore and I am actively working on it. And if you feel this way about yourself, there are very simple things you can do to make changes so you feel better about yourself. I think most of us have a comfortable weight we would like to be at. Whether we are there or not depends on a lot of things. But I promise you that being happy in your skin is one of the best things you can do for yourself and your long-term health.

If you feel that you need some help to get back on track in time for summer check out my breakthrough programs.

Love you all!

MINT: Part 1

Let me start by saying that I'm not sure where this need for mint-in-everything-that-I-eat is coming from. It may be that I just figured out that I really like it, or it may be that my body needs it and is telling me by making me want to put it in everything.

And the best part is.... it can literally be put in everything!

And it grows like a weed so running out is not a problem if you plant a pot of it. Mint is one of the few things that you actually should put in a pot because it keeps it contained and from taking over your garden.

Health & Nutrition Benefits of Eating Mint
  • Dried mint leaves, boiled in water, form a strong concoction that helps in soothing the digestive tract and easing the severity of stomachaches.
  • Drinking herbal mint tea reduces irritated bowel syndromes and cleanses the stomach.
  • Mint is a strong diuretic and therefore, helps in eliminating toxins from the body.
  • When included in the diet on a regular basis, mint reduces the growth of bacteria and fungus in the body.
  • The anti-fungal properties associated with mint help in curing asthma and other allergic conditions.
  • Crushed mint leaves helps in whitening teeth.
  • Mint helps in getting rid of headaches and migraines.
  • Inhaling mint gives relief from congestion problems, like sinus infections and common cold.
  • Inhaling essential oil of mint provides a sense of calm and thus, helps one relax the mind.
  • Menthol present in mint makes it an important component of many medicines and drugs.
  • Mint has antipruritic or anti-itch properties. When added with camphor, it helps to cure insect stings and bites.
  • Various researches indicate mint as having anti-cancer properties. The phytonutrient, called perillyl alcohol, in mint is believed to prevent colon, skin and lung cancer. (Source)

Insane Cravings

If only Gaga was around this week with that crazy meat dress of hers. I could have eaten the entire thing. Out of no where I got these intense cravings for meat. I haven't really eaten much of it (including eggs) in the past month and all of a sudden I was like "EGGS, BACON, HAMBURGERS, STEAK!"

So I've been eating eggs just about every day, and I ate Italian sausage the other night, and I made crazy awesome burgers last night (which I will be elaborating on in another post).

I'm feeling pretty good otherwise. I'm still drinking dark green leafy vegetable juice just about every day, and started making smoothies again. I think I'm about to begin my lady episode soon, which might explain the cravings for meat. I say I think because for the past 15 years I have not been successful at tracking it. I figure I've gotten along this far without knowing when it would hit.

I used to crave salty carbs all day, everyday. Specifically potato chips. Since I started with the dark green leafy vegetable juice they have pretty much gone away. I have read that when you crave salty carbs it's because you have a mineral deficiency. Guess what is LOADED with minerals? Dark green leafy vegetables. Who'da thunk it?

What do you guys crave? Salty, sweet, crunchy, creamy?

A Lucky Break

Yesterday was one of those days when you realize how lucky you really are, and all the S-H-I-T that you worry about really doesn't matter. My sister was horseback riding and fell off when her horse tripped. Luckily she only broke her shoulder. We all realize it could have turned out so much worse which made me think about how lucky we all are to be here and be healthy. That the little things that often consume us don't really matter. That family is the most important thing in the world. And that the people that are in your life should enrich it, not take your time and energy.

I have often thought that my sister and I were "lucky" (if you believe in luck). With all of the stupid things we've done, and all of the situations we got ourselves into that could have turned out so much worse. Yesterday was another one of those "We are so lucky!" moments.

I love you Julie!!!!!

Toxic Overload & Autism

Yesterday, updated statistics on the rates of Autism and Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) came out. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) claims 1 in 88 American children suffer with Autism or ASD.

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON???????

For years people have been blaming vaccines. But I don't really think that is the only reason for the rise in Autism. Since I started learning all this great stuff about nutrition and health, I have come to believe that what we eat (especially when you are pregnant) has so much more to do with your health than any other factor. And from what I have been reading about Autism, it is caused by a combination of a toxic overload and nutrition deficiencies.

Where could these kids be getting too much toxins and not enough nutrition?

Frosted Flakes, Pop Tarts, milk, Golden Grams, Gogurt, Cheerios, Coco Puffs, Hot Pockets, Fruit Roll Ups, white bread, Honey Roasted Peanuts, Taco Bell, McDonald's, Wendy's, Subway (yes Subway), pizza, french fries, chicken fingers, Combos, potato chips, Golden Grahams, Chips Ahoy, Pop Secret Extra Butter Popcorn, Chinese food takeout, Rice Crispy Treats, soy based infant formula, whey based infant formula, Ritz Crackers, squeeze cheese, string cheese, bologna, salami, hot dogs, hamburgers, Oreos, Gatorade, chocolate milk, etc, etc.

How many vegetable are on that list? Now many fresh fruits are on that list? I would venture to say this is what most kids eat today. Some sort of cereal for breakfast with milk & orange juice, a deli meat sandwich for lunch with various processed snacks, and chicken fingers and french fries for dinner. Disgusting!

No wonder there are fat kids everywhere, and Autism is on the rise.

I just read a very interesting article by Dr. Mercola on all of this. You know when you are standing on the outside looking in and you can see everything clear as day? That is how I feel about this. Dr. Mercola's article sums up all of the aspects that "could" contribute to ASD. (Although I feel like Mercola hits the nail on the head)

The Silent Time Bomb Now Affecting 1 in 54 Boys in the US
By Dr. Mercola (Original Source)
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has announced that 1 in 88 children in the U.S. are now diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD)i. The number represents a 23 percent increase in the last two years and 78 percent in the past five years.
But that was just the average—the numbers were much greater for Hispanics (110 percent) and black children (91 percent).
The study, published in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reportii , also found that ASDs are nearly five times more common among boys than girls.
Broken down, the numbers equate to 1 in 54 boys with ASDs, and 1 in 252 girls. The updated estimates are based on data collected in 14 American communities during 2008.
These communities comprised over eight percent of all American 8-year-olds that year. Interestingly, the number of children with ASDs varied widely from site to site.
The highest prevalence was found in Utah, where a staggering 1 in 47 eight-year-olds were identified with some form of ASD.
New Jersey was also far higher than the average, with 1 in 49iii . What's really going on here?
WHAT is Causing the Skyrocketing Increase in Autism Spectrum Disorders?
Personally, I don't see how anyone can look at a 78 percent increase of any health problem in a mere five years without snapping to attention. Prior to the CDC's announcement, the Canary Party, a citizens' action group on autism, rightfully predicted that the CDC would downplay the seriousness of these latest statistics.
On its new autism webpage, the CDC state they suspect some of the increase "is due to greater awareness and better identification" among some of the children.
But even taking that possibility into consideration, the statistics are truly shocking. How can one in 88 American children have some form of autistic disorder? In a normal, healthy environment, that just shouldn't happen. And the fact that it IS happening demands our immediate attention. Something is going very wrong, very fast...
While many are focusing their efforts on nailing down one culprit or another—vaccines being the perfect example—I believe taking such a narrow-minded approach can be extremely counterproductive. In my view, what we're seeing here is the culmination of what amounts to a perfect storm...
Research is now clearly showing that environmental factors play a primary role in the epidemic of autism spectrum disorders. But which environmental factors are to blame?
While vaccines have borne the brunt of people's suspicions, there's plenty of evidence suggesting there are multiple factors at play. The factor that prevents us from writing vaccines off as being harmless is the fact that toxic overload appears to be at the core of the problem, and many vaccines do indeed contribute to a child's overall toxic load. So while it's probably unreasonable to blame vaccines alone for the rapid rise in autism, it would be just as unreasonable to ignore their impact, and continue on with the one-fits-all vaccination policy as if everything is a-okay.
The majority of autism cases do appear to result from the activation or "expression," of a number of different genes, along with multiple epigenetic and environmental factors that interact to produce the traits of autism. But science is increasingly showing us just how malleable our genes are—they continuously respond to their environment, meaning, your body and everything you put into and onto it... Furthermore, there's no shortage of evidence that toxins of different sorts can wreak havoc with brain function. Add to this the more recent findings that your gut is profoundly influential for brain health, and a picture of toxic overload combined with inadequate nutrition comes into clear view.
Why We Must Insist on Invoking the Precautionary Principle
If multiple toxic exposures and poor nutrition is to blame, then trying to tease out "the" primary culprit will get us nowhere. I believe we must tackle the issue of ASD with a much wider aim, and that is to reduce ALL toxic exposure and improve nutrition. This tactic includes but is not limited to reducing the vaccine load, especially in the US where children receive the most vaccines of any country on the planet. I believe it's imperative to invoke the precautionary principle with respects to vaccines, and, at the very least, allow people to opt out if they so choose.
While vaccine advocates tend to stress the importance of so-called "herd immunity," saying the vaccine will not work unless the majority is vaccinated, there's a great price to pay by forcing everyone into a one-size-fits-all mold.
Not only are some children at greater risk for vaccine damage than others (which I'll review in a moment), but we also eliminate the ability to evaluate the health risks of vaccinations if no one is allowed to opt out. We NEED to conduct comparison studies to evaluate the health outcomes of vaccinated versus unvaccinated children, yet such studies are not done. An oft-cited reason for that is that it would be unethical to not vaccinate certain children... But this is not really a reasonable excuse today, as many parents want to opt out of one or more vaccines for their children.
Environmental Factors that May Play a Role in Autism
When looking into the possible environmental factors for autism, they are incredibly diverse. The following is just a short list of examples:
Electromagnetic fields: Work by Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt suggests there are distinct correlations between a woman's exposure to electromagnetic fields during pregnancy and her child's neurological functioning. He found that if you sleep in strong electromagnetic fields during pregnancy, your child will likely begin to exhibit neurological abnormalities within the first two years of life, such as neurological dysfunction, hyperactivity, and learning disorders.
In 2007, this theory received additional support from a study published in the Journal of the Australasian College of Nutritional & Environmental Medicineiv . It presented the theory that electromagnetic radiation (EMR) from cell phones, cell towers, Wi-Fi devices and other similar wireless technologies may work in conjunction with genetic and environmental factors, becoming an accelerating factor in autism. After more than five years of research on children with autism they found that EMR negatively affects cell membranes, allowing heavy metal toxins, which are associated with autism, to build up.
To learn more about the science of HOW electromagnetic radiation affects and harms your body, please review this previous article featuring Dr. Martin Blank.
Mercury toxicity: It is already an established fact that exposure to mercury can cause immune, sensory, neurological, motor, and behavioral dysfunctions -- all similar to traits defining, or associated with autism. Mercury pollution is widespread from the burning of fossil fuels, but the use of thimerosal-containing vaccines and dental amalgams—both of which contain mercury—also cannot be overlooked as major sources of individual exposure to this neurotoxin
Vaccines: A 2011 reviewv of the peer-reviewed, published studies on autism (going all the way back to 1943) revealed numerous documented cases of autism caused by encephalitis following vaccination. There are many potential vaccine-related culprits, including the use of toxic adjuvants; the presence of human DNA in vaccines; and the increasing number of vaccines given in a short period of time
Phthalates: Research from 2009 discovered that infants who lived in homes with vinyl floors were twice as likely to have autism five years later, compared to those with wood or linoleum flooring. Vinyl floors can emit chemicals called phthalates, which are widely used plastic softeners found in much more than just vinyl flooring. Hairsprays, perfumes, cosmetics, toys, shower curtains, wood finishers, lubricants, certain medical devices and more all contain phthalates. Researchers have suggested the chemicals may contribute to autism by disrupting hormones not only in small children but also in the womb
Vitamin D Deficiency: There is also a link between rampant vitamin D deficiency in pregnant women and the proportionate jump in autism, which has been highlighted by Dr. John Cannellvi . The vitamin D receptor appears in a wide variety of brain tissue early in the fetal development, and activated vitamin D receptors increase nerve growth in your brain
Neurologist Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride recently shared a common thread that may be linking these and other environmental factors together, namely brain toxicity stemming from gut toxicity, otherwise known as Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAPS). She cured her own son of autism using an all-natural treatment involving dietary changes and detoxification, and her hypothesis is in my view one of the most elegant.
GAPS: An Elegant Explanation of the Roots of Autism
Dr. Campbell-McBride is convinced that autistic children are born with perfectly normal brains and sensory organs, but that abnormal gut flora, passed on from their mother and father, leads to devastating gut and brain toxicity. In children with Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAPS), toxicity flowing from their gut throughout their bodies and into their brains, literally clogs the brain with toxicity, preventing it from performing its normal function and processing sensory information.
But what leads to such devastatingly abnormal gut flora?
Dr. Campbell discovered that a large percentage of mothers of autistic children were bottle-fed. Then, as they received many courses of antibiotics throughout their childhood, they developed increasingly worse abnormalities in their gut flora, which in turn was passed on to their children. Add to that a diet of processed foods and the use of birth control pills, and the damage to a woman's gut flora deepens even further, and each generation quickly gets worse and worse, unless active remediation is undertaken. According to Dr. Campbell-McBride:
"Many of these modern factors created a whole plethora of young ladies in our modern world who have got quite deeply abnormal gut flora by the time they are ready to have their first child."
Vaccination Policy is Oftentimes the "Straw that Breaks the Camel's Back"
Dr. Campbell-McBride's book Gut and Psychology Syndrome contains an entire chapter outlining what health care professionals need to do to improve the vaccination strategy, because the standard vaccination protocol is bound to damage GAPS babies.
She explains:
"It's a matter of the last straw breaking the camel's back. If the child is damaged enough, the vaccine can provide that last straw. But if it doesn't provide that last straw in a particular child, then it will get the child closer to the breaking point."
Fortunately, it's possible to rather inexpensively identify GAPS within the first weeks of your baby's life, which can help you make better-informed decisions about vaccinations, and about how to proceed to set your child on the path to a healthy life. The entire process for identifying children who would be at risk for developing autism from a vaccine is described in her book, but to sum it up, in her practice she starts out by collecting a complete health history of the parents, and their gut health is assessed. Then, within the first few days of life, the stool of the child can be analyzed to determine the state of her gut flora, followed by a urine test to check for metabolites, which can give you a picture of the state of your child's immune system.
These tests are available in most laboratories around the world and cost a very reasonable amount, about $80-100 per test -- peanuts compared to the incredible expense of treating an autistic child once the damage is done.
In my view it is absolutely VITAL to perform this analysis BEFORE you consider vaccinating your child. If the test results are normal the likelihood of autism after vaccines is dramatically reduced. As Dr. Campbell-McBride states, she has yet to find an autistic child with normal bowel flora. If you find that your baby has abnormal gut microflora, or begins to develop symptoms of autism a year or two later, the GAPS program should be started immediately, as the younger the child is when you start the treatment, the better the results. The child should not be given any vaccines until their microflora tests normal. For more information about the GAPS Nutritional Program, including the two types of GAPS diets, and the importance of fermented foods, please review this previous article.
Thoughts on Reversing the Trajectory of Autism Spectrum Disorders
Autism is a complex condition with many contributing factors and it takes a multi-faceted approach to treat it. We're now also beginning to understand it requires a multi-faceted approach to prevent it. Hopefully, more people will begin to take Dr. Campbell-McBride's information to heart and put it to practice so that more children may be spared from the get-go. But even that's not going far enough. We must tackle this problem from all angles, and that also includes:
Reduce your and your child's toxic burden: This includes avoiding as many dangerous chemicals as possible, which makes listing the do's and don'ts virtually impossible. There's just too many. As a general rule though, eating whole organic foods will go a long way, as that automatically cuts out processed foods and related chemicals, genetically engineered foods, and artificial sweeteners.
Also be careful with the personal care products you use, as well as your household cleaning products and home building materials and furnishings... Opting for "green" and/or organic alternatives will help reduce many of the toxins most people encounter on a daily basis.
Do whatever you can to establish a toxin-free environment for your whole family, and then establish a detoxification program. Please remember hidden toxins like mold and fluoride. The book, Our Toxic World: A Wake Up Call, by Dr. Doris Rapp is an excellent resource if you're unsure of how or where to start.
Lower the EMF burden in your home, especially in your bedrooms.
Carefully review the vaccination issue, including the conventional vaccination schedule, and know that in most U.S. states you still have the right to opt out of vaccines.
Avoid pasteurized milk; it's an absolute imperative to the treatment of autism. Anyone managing this illness without restricting milk is deceiving themselves. This includes all milk products, such as ice cream, yogurt and whey. Even natural flavorings in food must be avoided unless the processor can guarantee that caseinate is not included.
Complete elimination of sugar/fructose, juice, soda, French fries and wheat (pasta, bagels, cereal, pretzels, etc) is also highly recommended.
Get proper sun exposure. It is my personal belief that vitamin D deficiency in conjunction with damaged gut flora may be two of the most significant contributing factors to autism. Optimizing your vitamin D levels and your gut flora during pregnancy appears to be the most important prevention strategies discovered to date.

Another Use for Thyme

I set up a few Google filters so that everyday I get emails with links to everything that's going on on the web related to the topics I'm interested in. One of them is "raw food" and for the past few weeks I've been seeing stories about how the herb thyme "may" be more useful in curing acne than products that arbenzoyl peroxide based.

Acne is big business. So is skin care and anti-aging. Wouldn't it be great if we could change our skin by changing what we eat?

I have no doubt.

Acne cure may be a matter of thyme
April 11 2012 (Original Source)
By FIONA MACRAE
The herb thyme may be more effective at treating acne than current medicines, research has found.
A tincture made from the plant may also be kinder to the skin and, unlike powerful peroxide-based treatments, will not leave bleach marks on pillow cases and clothes.
Scientists at Leeds Metropolitan University compared thyme’s spot-busting potential with marigold, myrrh – three plants already sold as acne treatments by herbalists – and acne-fighting chemical benzoyl peroxide.
They steeped the herbs in alcohol to draw out the active compounds before adding pimple-causing bacterium propionibacterium acnes. The thyme tincture was the most effective at killing bacteria, destroying around 100,000 bacteria per ml – or half a million per teaspoonful. It was also slightly more effective than benzoyl peroxide, the chemical in some prescription treatments and acne products such as Clearasil and Oxy 5 and 10.
Tests also showed the antibacterial effects were not simply due to the alcohol in the tincture sterilising the skin.
Researcher Dr Margarita Gomez-Escalada said more tests were needed but added: “If thyme tincture is proven to be clinically effective, it may be a natural alternative to current treatments”.
Treatments containing benzoyl peroxide can cause a burning sensation, she said.
She added: “Herbal preparations are less harsh, while our results suggest they can be just as, if not more, effective.” - Daily Mail
This article is talking about using it as a topical treatment. However, what would happen if we juiced and drank it? I may just have to come up with a recipe including thyme as one of the ingredients. I'll get back to you on this!

The healing power of JUICE

before- not as bad as it used to be but still painful
I know I've mentioned how I have been prone to awful acne over the past few years. Well, I have finally found something that gets rid of it. And guess what? It's not a magically high priced cream. It's literally dark green leafy vegetable juice.

I started drinking it about 6 weeks ago and slowly my face cleared up 90% of the way. Then, because I was busy starting Raw Generation, I stopped for a little over a week. Well wouldn't you know my acne started to come back. I was like W-T-F?

A few days ago I made a few jars for myself and literally after drinking it for 2 days my acne is almost gone- AGAIN! And I didn't do anything different with my cleansing routine (if you want to call it that).

2 days later- not photoshopped
The more I read about all this health stuff, the more I am convinced that skin problems like acne and aging are solved from the inside out not the other way around (which is what the cosmetic companies want you to believe).

So! If you juice, add more dark green leafy vegetables. If you don't juice but want the benefits...we will be open for business in about 2 weeks!!!!

Juice for everyone!

5 WAYS: Salad Dressing

(Source)
So salad dressing is one of those things that I think many people don't really think about making because it is so easy to buy. But I promise you that once you start making your own salad dressings you will never want to go back. It is so easy, probably cheaper, and definitely healthier for you.

Most salad dressings are made with soybean oil. I go into why I don't eat soy in This "Health" Food's SOYld Reputation and Just SOY No.

One important thing to remember is to use "first cold pressed" olive oil. This comes from the first pressing of the olives and it is the best kind. Also, I use a blender/mini food processor to make my salad dressings (especially the creamy ones). I find that it just blends everything up better.

Creamy Peppercorn
  • olive oil
  • cashews, raw
  • apple cider vinegar, raw
  • lemon juice
  • cracked peppercorns

Honey Vinaigrette
  • olive oil
  • apple cider vinegar, raw
  • honey, raw
  • sea salt & pepper

Creamy Balsamic Vinaigrette
  • olive oil
  • balsamic vinegar
  • honey, raw
  • cashews, raw

Honey Mustard
  • olive oil
  • apple cider vinegar, raw
  • honey, raw
  • mustard seeds
  • cashews, raw

Herb Vinaigrette
  • olive oil
  • apple cider vinegar, raw
  • sea salt & pepper
  • fresh or dried herbs: sage, rosemary, thyme, basil, garlic
You can basically add raw cashews to any salad dressing and make it creamy. I usually do some different variation of the ones above depending on what I feel like but it is so simple!!

Changes are coming....

is the smiling man in a lab coat
supposed to reassure us? he looks very scientific

I just got this lovely piece of propaganda in the mail yesterday. It basically says that now instead of just drinking chlorine from tap water, they are now adding in ammonia. AWESOME! I LOVE AMMONIA! Now if they could only find a way to put red wine in the water supply I would really be happy. People must really be stupid enough to believe this garbage otherwise they wouldn't be sending out mass mailings. Looks like it's time to find a water cooler delivery company!

I've been meaning to do this for a while now for the sole reason that when I drink tap water out of a cup it smells like I'm diving into a swimming pool. I never really noticed it until recently so I'm not sure if they changed the amount they put into our supply or if it is because I am eating a cleaner diet. Either way it's time.

Oh and BONUS! They put a little section in the notice for kidney dialysis patients. Now people on dialysis have to consult their doctor before drinking the tap water. And another section for fish owners. You better stop using tap water to fill your fish tank otherwise your beloved fishies are going to have to be prematurely flushed down the toilet.

AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO SEES SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And yet another reason to sign up for a water delivery service- fluoride! I don't think I have written about this yet. In a nutshell it is literally an industrial waste product that the powers that be force on us and tell us that it's for our health. Just Google "fluoride toxicity in water" and read for a few minutes. If you are anything like me you will be thoroughly disgusted. Fluoride is only beneficial (if it really is) when it's used topically like a mouth rinse.

So in the middle of writing this I called up and ordered a water cooler to be delivered to my house. You wanna know how cheap it is per month? $23.99 THAT'S IT! There are no excuses why anyone who is subjected to crazy chemicals put in their municipal water supply can't afford this. And BONUS! The company I ordered from has coolers that dispense hot and cold water- INSTANT TEA!!!

Here's what to ask:

  • are any chemicals added to the water?
  • is fluoride added to the water?

Who plans on ordering water? or already does?

The Reality of NYE Goals

Looking back is always funny. For whatever reason, your lofty ambitions always seem so realistic and attainable. But ahhh how reality has a way of changing everything. Over the past few months I have been very productive. However, I would have to be productive 100% of the 24 hours in each day in order to get done what I had wanted to get done December 31st of 2011. Lets take a look at what I had planned for myself:

December 31st, 2011- My specific goals for 2012 are:
  • finish my book (I just finalized scope) I am not ready to write a book I keep going back and forth, plus I am starting Raw Generation so everything else pretty much took a backseat
  • figure out which publishing route I am going to take obsolete
  • grow my readership to 10,000 reads per day (I am at 1900+ this month) I had a huge month in February where I had over 28,000 reads IN ONE MONTH!!! Now I am averaging 432 per day, which is a huge jump from 69 per day in December!!!
  • create and sell and app for android/iPhone (details TBD) Still in my radar for later on this year.
  • work towards seeing 40 health counseling clients per month (starting in March) Wow, that was serious ambition. I am still working on getting 4 clients haha. Slow and steady wins the race :)
  • vacation at least once (Rincon, PR is calling my name) Got out to Los Angeles which was on my list for a while, still haven't planned a big trip yet. Maybe in the fall.
  • start saving $ to buy land/design & build a house (not ready yet, but want to have $$ by the time I am) Definitely not able to do this yet. Maybe once Raw Generation gets off the ground.
  • running the NYC Marathon Still haven't heard if I got an entry yet, although I am not so secretly hoping that I don't get a number because I know that this was me being over ambitious. But just in case I am training.
So, some things I hadn't planned for were going raw and starting Raw Generation. These came about in January & February, and am so excited to be launching soon! May 1st we are hoping to go live. Vegetable juice for everyone!

What's in your mouth?

Many people have cavity fillings. But what many people don't know is that their "silver" fillings are not actually silver. They are 50% mercury. Yes mercury! The same stuff that we are told to be wary of when eating certain fish- especially during pregnancy. But it is perfectly fine for the American Dental Association to approve it to be drilled into our mouths and remain there for a lifetime.

Something's not right here, right?

1 gram of mercury can make the fish in a 20 acre lake unfit to eat for an entire year. Why then are dentists pumping our mouths full of the stuff? What the hell?
Studies show that mercury is the MOST toxic heavy metal to your body; this excellent new documentary film, Mercury Undercover, exposes the dangers of mercury contamination to human health and to the environment
The number one source of mercury pollution is coal-fired power plants. Second position is held by dental practices due to amalgam fillings, which are 50 percent mercury
Dental amalgams, used for more than 150 years, continue to be used by half of the dentists in North America despite a mountain of evidence they slowly leak toxic mercury into your body, and are particularly dangerous for children and pregnant women
Mercury becomes a “biochemical train wreck in your body,” causing your cell membranes to leak, and inhibit key enzymes your body needs for energy production and removal of toxins. Mercury toxicity can lead to major inflammation and chronic illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease
The FDA, in partnership with the ADA, have been successful for many years in concealing the dangers of amalgam from the public, but organizations such as the Consumers for Dental Choice are making inroads toward getting mercury banned from dentistry worldwide. (Original Source)
This just started coming into my radar recently, and fortunately for me I don't have amalgam fillings. But if you do (you would know because they are silver in color) I would strongly suggest looking into getting them refilled with porcelain fillings. And if you do decide to get the mercury fillings taken out of your mouth it is VERY  important to have them replaced the correct way.

Here's some more info about safe removal https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http://www.iaomt.org/articles/files/files288/Safe%2520Removal%2520of%2520Amalgam%2520Fillings.pdf&pli=1

I NEED SLEEP

Not right now, but in general. I have always been the type to need a lot of sleep- even back when I was a kid according to my parents. Unfortunately I am the lightest sleeper in this universe.

Several years back when I was in college I was introduced to a white noise maker. I quickly became addicted and have been sleeping with one ever since. More recently I found those foam ear plug things which are literally a life saver and much easier to carry around with you than a white noise maker.
I am especially sunny and bright when someone wakes me up. Kidding. That couldn't be further from the truth. I would hate me if I had to wake me up. I'm sorry to my parents for all of the stink eyes and disdainful comments that were spewed in my half-sleep stupor.

And since it is spring the birds are back. Normally this is awesome, however this year the noisiest bird that ever existed has decided to make its nest in our gutter. Cute! but noisy. So not only do I hear her squawking at all hours of the day and night, but she gave birth to numerous chicks that are just as noisy as she is. My noisemaker was no match for her last night. This F-ing bird woke me up from a dream w/ her jibber jabber in the middle of the night. All I can say is thank me for keeping those foam ear plugs by my bed.

On to the point of this story... sleep is so important in staying healthy. And quality sleep is key. During the night when you are dreaming crazy S-H-I-T your body is healing itself, and (hopefully) burning fat. The body's soul purpose at night is to undo all of the damage that had been done to it the previous day. If you are not getting enough sleep or getting pour quality sleep then your body cannot do it's job. And the junk builds up.

Remember how about 50 words ago I mentioned that your body is supposed to burn fat while you sleep? It's true, BUT only if you go to bed with an empty stomach. The reason your body burns fat if you go to bed with an empty stomach is because fat is your body's energy reserve and guess what? You need energy during your sleep to detox and cleanse. So here's what you do. Eat no later than 4 hours before you go to bed and make it one of your lighter meals of the day.

Even I (the model of all good habits lol- kidding!) have a hard time with this one ESPECIALLY considering my absolute favorite thing is long, later dinners. I absolutely love going out to dinner and sitting there for 3+ hours eating and drinking wine and talking. Actually if I was super loaded that's probably what I would do every night of the week.

Anyway the moral of the story here is to try to do anything to get the best quality sleep you can get. Sleep machines, ear plugs, blackout shades. Anything except sleep meds! Should probably put a disclaimer on this one. I'm not advocating sleep meds.

Nighty night!

Thyme to plant herbs!

thyme herb
thyme
Ok, people. If you do no other gardening than plant herbs you are way ahead of the game.  There is nothing better than snipping off a sprig of thyme out of your own herb garden. If you are not a gardener or just haven't thought of it then please consider. Aside from the health benefit of eating fresh herbs, the flavors will add so much depth to anything you make.

And it is soooooo much cheaper then buying herbs in the grocery store! I would highly recommend planting herbs in clay pots because you can bring them in in the winter and as long as you still water them and they are close to sunlight you can have fresh herbs all winter long.

All you have to do is buy the pots, the soil, and the seeds. It can be as small or as large as you like. The initial investment will pay for itself over and over again. So try it! Maybe you could make it your Sunday afternoon project hint hint.

Berry Bowls

berries in melon

SO FRESH! This is such an easy and elegant way of eating fruit. And simple! Just cut the melon in half, scoop out the seeds, and make sure to cut a little bit off the bottom so the melon doesn't wobble around.
Berries and melon go so well together! Also, I recently became obsessed with mint. I would highly recommend chopping it up and including it in ALL fruit salads.

Such a healthy breakfast! And you are getting like 3-4 servings of fruit at once.

Juice is a flowin

testing juice recipes

Well ladies and gents...after a bunch of disgusting tasting juice experiments we have made some progress. Progress is a funny thing. You go into something with your preconceived notions of how something will taste or how easy something will be. I honestly thought that it would be quick coming up with a recipe. Hours and hours later I realize it is an art, much like baking.

I am not a baker. I cook. And when I cook I usually go by smell and taste and ad a sprinkle here and a dash there. This is nothing of the sort because our base (dark green leafy vegetable juice) is such a bitter flavor that it throws everything off. And it smells like grass X 10. So, we had to do it the old fashioned way and try many many different flavor combos.

We started out with a base of 50% dark green juice- kale, collards, spinach, swiss chard & wheat grass. KILLER! And let me tell you it was a lot harder to cover up that bitter taste than I thought. But in the end we prevailed over the vegetables. And I didn't throw up which was AMAZING considering the fact that I was nauseous after drinking all those nasty flops.

One recipe (almost) down! Many more to come!

APRIL: In Season

Spring is in the air. The birds are chirping (more on that later). Summer is so close! And more fruits & veggies are coming into season. Which means farmer's markets are going to be popping up soon!!

It has been such a mild winter and now an early spring that I am itching to get into the garden to start planting. Resisting temptation has always been a weakness. However, gardening is a TON of work and to plant now may mean the unfortunate luck of a late freeze or freak snow storm. So I wait not so patiently until our area's frost-free date of May 15th.

In the meantime, here are the fruits and veggies that are in season that you can find in your grocery store.

artichoke

broccoli

lettuce

mango

mushrooms

pineapple

peas

zucchini

Happy Spring!

I am in college. How do I eat when all I am offered is junk?

Ladies in college. My beautiful cousin Erica asked me for advice on what to eat in college. It took me a while to get to this, but here it is. It's very simple. I assume most of you are eating at cafeterias with meal plans so I will go ahead and say that the prepared foods you are eating are most likely garbage.

This is what you can do:
  • eat all the fruit you can find
  • eat the salads
  • drink water instead of soda or "vitamin" waters
  • buy mixed nuts, dried fruit, and apples/oranges/bananas and keep them in your room
  • something tasty & healthy you can eat is hummus w/ cut up veggies
  • absolutely do not eat late night
  • do not eat fried foods or pizza
It may be fun now and you think you won't be one of the girls that blows up, but you aren't an exception to the rule. Speaking from experience, I thought I could keep up with the boys in drinking and eating. I gained a lot of weight in college. And guess what? I'm still working it off. I'm 29.

Loosing weight sucks. It's much easier to stay slim than lose weight. It is actually quite simple. The more fruits and vegetables and whole foods you eat the better off you will be. What's a whole food? Something that still looks like it came from nature. Nuts, seeds, fruit, vegetables, brown rice, anything that is still in it's original form.

Here are some other facts:
  • muffins are not a healthy option
  • cheese is the best tasting thing in the world but if you eat a ton of it you will gain weight
  • chips go straight to your hips
  • most smoothies are sugar bombs unless it is made strictly with whole fruit
  • late night eating is THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO
  • the ice cream in the cafeteria is garbage
A few words about drinking. First of all, we all know drinking is an integral part of the college experience. If you are one of those that don't drink that much you are ahead of the curve. Alcohol is empty calories. Which means you are just inhaling calories that make you fat. Alcohol is a double whammy because you tend to eat more crappy food.

Here's the thing. The point isn't to be perfect all the time. The point is to be good most of the time. When you aren't partying make a point to be healthy. One or two pounds aren't that bad to get rid of, but 10-20 lb's will literally take you forever to work off. And you won't be able to do it while you are doing keg stands and eating pizza at 3am.

Women definitely have a disadvantage when it comes to packing on the pounds. But it can be easy to stay slim and healthy if you get in the habit of eating fruits and vegetables.

If you happen to be in college and have questions post a comment below and I'll do my best to get you answers. Stay beautiful ladies!
